From the kitchen

Hearty food, made the way home tastes.

Sunrise Kitchen is a Johannesburg kitchen built on the food people gather around — flaky pies, bunny chows packed with curry, Cape Malay and Indian-South African curries, and muffins for the drive home.

The menu carries the flavours of home kitchens and corner shops: turmeric and cinnamon, slow curry, buttery pastry, the sharp lift of pickle. It is food you eat with your hands or with people. A plate is never really just for one person.

You will find takeaway packed for the road and family portions for the table. Order online for collection, or ask what is coming out of the oven when you order.

Ubuntu first

I am because we are. That is the way a table is set here — one more plate, one more chair, one more story.

Family food

Pies for the road, curry for the table, muffins for the people who drop by. Food that fits the way families actually eat.

Made to share

A bunny chow is built for hands and company. A curry comes with enough roti to pass around. Nothing is precious.

Around the table

Comfort food, and the conversations it starts.

What people tell us after a bunny chow, a pie and a shared curry — in their own words.

  • I stopped in for a pie on my way home and ended up buying a whole curry for the family. The pastry is proper — flaky, not shy with the filling — and the curry has that slow, home-cooked depth you do not get from a packet.

  • The bunny chow is the one I keep coming back for. They pack it so it still travels well, and the heat is honest. My office orders on Fridays and there is never anything left.

  • Sunday lunch is the curry and roti. It feels like the food I grew up with — the Cape Malay spices are there, the lentils are soft, and there is enough for everyone to have seconds.

  • The muffins are dangerous. I came for one and left with four. It is the kind of food you want to hand to someone else because it just makes the day better.
